#Review: ‘The Challenge – Circle of Conspiracy Book One’ by Cas Peace

When I started reading ‘The Challenge’ I was aware of any of Cas Peace’s previous work. And I am so sorry about that.

‘The Challenge – Circle of Conspiracy Book One’ is the fourth book in the triple trilogy Artesans of Albia fantasy series. And it is an amazing fantasy book!

It’s well written, well-paced, and full of twists of plot and the reader never gets bored. Cas Peace has done magnificent job creating a fantasy word, described in great details.

The characters reach out and grab your interest, once you start reading, you don’t want to put it down.

I loved Brynne Sullyan, the main female characters. She’s clever, she’s witty, she’s strong and fearless. What an A-female!

Now I know that my Christmas reads will be: the rest of Artesans Of Albia series books!

TheChallenge

Blurb:

Friend against friend, lover against lover, ally against ally. Conflict is coming …

Nine months have passed since Brynne Sullyan helped forge an alliance between the realms of Albia and Andaryon. A fragile peace reigns as both sides recover from the events of the previous year. Then mysterious raiders strike Andaryon villages. Attempts are made on the life of Albia’s High King. As Sullyan scrambles to find those responsible, unseen enemies threaten to pull apart everything she has worked for, including her marriage.

The alliance begins to crumble, and Sullyan finds herself caught between two monarchs: the king she’s sworn allegiance to, and the man she loves as a father. To betray either one would break her heart, but if conflict is inevitable, she must make a choice…

#BookBlast: ‘Blood prophesy of Queens’ Destiny’ by Barb Jones

Todays’ post is about two former child prodigies, two strangers and a prophesy. And Macedonian artefacts! You may not know but Macedonia is a vast area in Northern Greece, the birthplace of Alexander the Great.

That’s why I wanted to know more about ‘Blood prophesy of Queens’ Destiny’ by Barb Jones.

This is the blurb:

“Amber Stone, once a child prodigy, has just become curator of a special collection of Macedonian artifacts for the Seattle Museum of Natural History. Chloe, a prodigy of a different sort, holds a position at the museum focusing on tribal art. The two become fast friends, united by Amber’s unsettling dreams and Chloe’s unorthodox ways of dealing with them. Two strangers arrive in town, bringing with them a prophecy recorded more than three-thousand years ago, a prophecy that places Amber directly in the midst of a battle that has spanned a millennia.”

If you want more, here is an excerpt:

“Flames surrounded her.  Amber floated among them, naked again.  She could smell the sweet and nauseating odor of burning flesh, but it was not her flesh.  She looked at herself, saw the flames surrounding her body, and still felt inexplicably cool.  Flames caressed her legs, licked at her back, and mingled with her hair, but she remained undamaged.  From beneath her she heard screams, loud and torturous, rising to a feverish pitch and then ending in gagging coughs.  As soon as one faded others began, and Amber tried but failed to look through the fire to see the people consumed by the flames.

From above, Amber heard more cries of pain, but these were different.  Howls and whines replaced human voices, reminding her of dogs squealing in pain. A new odor assaulted her, the deep smell of burning hair.  Finally, the yells, howls, and squeals came at once, a cacophony that grew in intensity and power until she shut her eyes, pulled her hands to her ears, and screamed herself.

The noise of Amber’s scream was unearthly; even as she opened her mouth it seemed to her that the voice came from elsewhere. She opened her eyes and put her hands down, but found her lips still parted and the hollow, overpowering eruption from within didn’t stop.  It grew in volume until she could no longer hear the cries of those dying in the flames.  She felt her throat growing strained from the effort and wondered why she hadn’t stopped screaming.  Finally, she placed one hand on her chin and one on the top of her head and pushed her mouth shut.

Silence—it fell like a blanket over Amber, smothering the flames beneath it.  She was still floating, but below her was an ocean of bodies.  Men, women, children, dogs—all charred beyond recognition.  Not dogs, wolves. Some were still locked in battle.  She saw a wolf, body still smoking from the flames, with its mouth still locked on the throat of a man burned so completely that his arm was only an ash covered skeleton.  There were at least a hundred dead people and twice that number of wolves.  The stench was overpowering, choking her, and tears flowed down her cheeks as she tried to breathe.

Suddenly the ground was clear and she sat on a bench watching small children playing on a jungle gym.  A little girl in a bright orange shirt and white Capri pants skipped along singing, “The hour, the hour, the hour, born without knowledge of power.” She watched a toddler at the top of the jungle gym climbing unsteadily.  He’s going to fall!  Amber tried to stand and found she could not.  She watched in horror as the little boy fell.  It was about a nine-foot drop, but the boy fell slowly, his overalls rippling with the wind, his dark brown hair flying up over his face.

Suddenly a wolf was there, and it caught the boy in its mouth.  Amber braced herself for the sound of teeth tearing into bone and flesh, but they were gone.  The jungle gym was gone.  The singing girl was gone, and Amber sat on the bench surrounded by a misty red fog.

“You’re the child of prophecy.” Amber stared.  The man from the park, the one with the sideburns, sat on the bench beside her and held out the little boy.  No, not a boy—it was a doll with a ceramic head.”

Having been born and raised in Hawaii, Barb Jones loved telling stories ever since she was a child about vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and witches.  Barb was a little girl who loved scary stories, much to her mother’s dismay. The scarier – the better.  Hawaii was a perfect place for stories until she moved to Seattle.  Then she decided to turn a love for the supernatural into writing stories to see if others would love them as much as I do.  Currently, Barb Jones lives in Florida but since she’s a Seattle girl at heart, her stories take place in the Northwest.  She continues to write supernatural stories of vampires, werewolves, witches, and more while enjoying the beaches and sunshine.  She also loves to help others and give back to my community.

The book sound amazing. Check out this Excerpt:

After meeting with my Lords’ Council over breakfast and consuming a light dinner, I sat in the throne room as I regularly did and listened to the plights of my people. For the rest of the afternoon, I handed out advice and presented solutions as needed to the men and women who came before me. When I revived the old Hestian tradition of opening the great hall to my subjects, I expected to resolve quarrels of great magnitude involving large quantities of money and property, but I quickly learned that some of my people were so obstinate that they were unable to solve even the smallest disputes locally. In the space of two and a half grueling hours, I laid three conflicts centered on betrothals to rest and resolved six disagreements that involved livestock and property. Once those men and women filed out of the great hall, my herald addressed the last remaining fey in attendance.

“Kneel before the throne and state your concerns to the queen,” he directed.

An elderly Hestian man with closely cropped, gray-peppered carmine hair stepped forward and knelt before my throne as he had been commanded. He made the sign of the star to honor the four gods and their fey children, touched his head to the ground, and placed his outstretched arms flat on the pulsating floor tiles. While the first motion was customary amongst my people, the more submissive gesticulation piqued my interest since most male subjects simply bowed or kneeled in my presence based on their rank and our familiarity. However, as much as I wanted to indulge my curiosity about the man’s unusual supplication, he spoke before I could address it.

“The year after molten sand becomes silver glass the following will come to pass: The fire shall give its life’s blood to water, and the wind will rise to claim Hesta’s daughter.”

I furrowed my brow and opened my mouth to respond, but before I could ask the meaning of the man’s strange proclamation, he abruptly rose into a kneeling position and pulled a dagger from his satchel. My ladies in waiting screamed and flames formed in my hands as two knights stepped forward to subdue him, but they did not move swiftly enough. The man plunged the gleaming blade into his abdomen and fell face-forward onto the floor, which burned more brightly as his blood left his body and spilled onto the endlessly rippling surface. The knights quickly rolled the suicidal man onto his back and checked for a heartbeat.

“He is dead, your majesty,” one of the knights announced, obviously shaken by the sudden suicide.

“Please find out who he is,” I ordered, closing my hands to snuff out the flames. “Then report your findings to me and notify his family that he is dead.”

“Yes, your majesty,” they acknowledged.

As the knights lifted the man’s body and began to carry him out of the room, something caught my eye.

“Wait!”

The armor-clad men halted and I strode over to them, careful not to step in the blood that soiled my usually immaculate floor. Once I reached the trio, I pulled the dead man’s knife from its fleshy sheath. As I suspected, a vaguely familiar animal had been etched onto the hilt of the blade. A trio of tiny sapphires served as the scintillating eyes of the blue phoenix while its shining silver beak was open as if it had been mid-shriek when the artisan carved its likeness into the weapon.

“Thank you. Now, you may go.”

Once the knights resumed their gruesome task, I turned to face my ladies and made eye contact with Sera, whose naturally bronzed features were nearly as pale as the ivory lace on her dress.

“Sera, please find Esti and Amaia and ask them to meet me in my library.”

“Yes, your majesty,” she acknowledged with a curtsy before leaving the throne room, struggling to keep her gaze from resting on the trail of fresh blood beside her as she fled.

While the man who had died moments before clearly had no desire to end my life, my intuition still told me that a considerable threat was nigh… and that the two women’s guidance would be invaluable if I wanted to protect myself and my subjects from the imminent danger that had just begun to reveal itself.

AND HERE’S AN EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT I have the honour to be hosting today:

**”Alexander, are you trying to avoid me?” She turned her seat in my direction and leaned back in her chair while she folded her arms to stare at me. I used to think she was the prettiest girl I’d ever seen. She had the softest chocolate brown hair and captivating grey eyes. She was like kryptonite to me as a horny teenage kid. She traded her long locks for shoulder length waves and today she was wearing a tailored cream suit jacket with matching skirt. All grown up and professional looking. No signs of the wild surfer girl with a drug problem.

“What makes you think that?” I cleared my throat as I stop my eyes from going to her long legs that were crossed in front of her.

What the fuck, Turner?

“Because I know you. You love that restaurant and never turn it down. We always go there when we are in Houston.”

“I just can’t, okay.  You know that Courtney and I have only just gotten back together, and she still doesn’t know that you work for me. I need to tell her. So until I disclose everything to her and see how she feels about it, I can’t hang out with you, Erica.”

“I don’t see what the big deal is. You and I have been over for years.”

“I realize that.”

“Besides, if I wanted you, I’d have you already.”

Before I could respond to her statement Paul Deal, the Pure Valley Aqua CEO, walked into the conference room to start the meeting. My thoughts were reeling from Erica’s statement.

If she wanted me, she could have me?

I knew that she actually believed that, and it was the precise reason I needed to come clean to my wife before all of this spun out of control.**

#BookBlast: Braving Fate – The Mythean Arcana Book 1 by Linsey Hall

Linsey Hall is the author of the Mythean Arcana, a sexy paranormal romance series. Before becoming a romance novelist, Linsey was an underwater archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). Her books draw upon her love of history, travel, and the paranormal elements that she can’t help but include.

Braving Fate – The Mythean Arcana Book 1 is her new book, which is already in my to-read list. It’s a Paranormal Romance (Cover Artist: Damonza) with a reference to Britain’s warrior queen Boudica.

As chaos looms, a warrior queen is reborn

“Bookish academic Diana Laughton has been having terrible dreams. Dreams of battle, dreams of blood… dreams so vivid she’s living them day and night. When demons invade her quiet life, she wonders if she’s going mad. Or if perhaps she’s remembering a past life she had no idea existed…!

In the midst of betrayal, he must protect her

“Mythean Guardian Cadan Trinovante loved and betrayed Britain’s warrior queen Boudica two millennia ago. Now he’s tasked with protecting mortals whose lives affect the fate of humanity. His latest assignment is Boudica herself, reincarnated as a woman with no idea of her past or her fated future. Though in the irresistible form of Diana Laughton, it’s possible Cadan has once again met his match…”

To succumb to seduction could prove fatal

Rogue Soul - Ebook

Here’s an Excerpt
“Central England, AD 60, eve of the Roman conquest of Britain
The woman he loved lay dying in his arms. Blood spilled over her breast, trickling from the dagger she’d sunk into her chest. Drops of blood hitting the dirt floor of the stone roundhouse echoed hollowly in his ears, amplified by the dawning knowledge of what he’d done. What she’d done. What they’d done.

“Why, Boudica?” His heart and voice were breaking. “Why do this?”

She shuddered in his arms, her broken body cold and fragile with looming death, but no less fierce than when she’d fought on the field of battle the previous dawn. She was their warrior queen, the force that had drawn thousands of British Celts together to revolt against Roman occupation, and he her top general.

She was his love. The one bright spot in the miserable spectacle of blood and death his life had become.

Boudica drew a harsh breath that rattled in her wounded chest and glared at him, her eyes alight with hatred.

“Why?” It was clear she would have screamed it if she could. Another faltering breath. “After your betrayal, you ask me why?”

“Betrayal? I did it for you.”

Her bitter laugh died on a cough. “I thought you knew me. I was wrong. You only know what you think me to be. I’m a warrior, the leader and symbol of our beaten land. I led my people in battle for our lives, our homes, our freedom.” She paused to catch her breath. “But we’ve lost. Irreparably.”

His jaw clenched, his chest aching with the weight of their past and his future. For she would die this night, her future forever erased. Because of him. Because he hadn’t been able to protect her. As he hadn’t protected his village and family before he’d joined her.

“The Roman dogs are at our door.” She coughed. “My daughters dead at their hands. Our lands stolen. Why would I live when capture is inevitable and my very life will be used as leverage? My head will be on a pike in Rome before summer’s end. More likely, they’ll use me against our people.” She raked him with a scathing glance and coughed again. Blood marred her colorless lips. “What would you do, O great warrior?”

“The same.” His throat burned. Capture was inevitable. And unbearable. Now, with the final battle lost and thousands of their families and allies dying in the fields around them, the fate that awaited her at the hands of the Romans would be worse than death, not only for her, but very likely for her people as well.

He’d tried to save her from this, but she hadn’t let him. He would have committed any deed, no matter how terrible, to save the woman who’d changed his life when he’d met her a year ago. But Boudica was a warrior first, his woman second. And she would die believing he had betrayed her.

She coughed, her pallor more pronounced. “And yet you would deny me my honorable death?”

“I love you. I’d do anything to save you.”

“And I thought I loved you,” she whispered. And as her eyes closed, the enormous life force that had propelled Boudica, Celtic Queen of the Iceni, evaporated.

The crushing weight of grief squeezed the breath out of his lungs. Collapsing over her, the black night swallowed his roar of pain. He would have vengeance.

Soulceress - Ebook

Chapter 1

Cadan Trinovante jerked awake, the sheets tangled in his fists. He ignored the vibrating phone that had awakened him from the nightmare and stared at the wide wooden rafters supporting the ceiling above him, struggling to catch his breath. Of all the memories that had faded in his two thousand years of life, the memory of Boudica’s death was the one that never had.

Guilt tugged at him and he reached for the phone.

“Cadan,” he said as he glanced at the clock on the bedside table. The gleam of Edinburgh’s streetlights shone on hands pointing toward one a.m. The yells of revelers stumbling from pub to pub filtered in through the open window.

“Cadan, it’s Warren.”

Cadan merely grunted in response and walked to the window. He listened with half an ear as he stared out at the gothic spires of Edinburgh’s churches and the soot-blackened stone of the surrounding buildings. They rose tall and narrow, pressed cheek by jowl on either side of the sloping cobblestones of the city’s oldest street. Cadan shut out the cool night air and the sound of fading revelry.

“You’ve a new assignment,” Warren said. “Can you be here in an hour?”

Finally. He needed something to keep his mind off the past. The damn dreams had been hounding him more often lately and he was ready to forget, to slip back into work.

“Aye, I’ll see you by two,” he said.

Damn it. He could still hear the revelers below. Living for so long was wearying, but listening to others take such joy in life was just salt in the wound.

In less than an hour, he strode through the great iron-sheathed wooden doors of a building on the campus of the Immortal University. The eyes of the eerie stone gargoyles who guarded the entrance followed him as he entered the cool halls of the Praesidium, named over a thousand years ago when Latin was still the language of education.

Fucking Latin. Fucking Romans.

He dragged a hand through his hair. The short drive to the outskirts of Edinburgh where the university was located hadn’t fully banished his dreams.

His footsteps were soundless on the marble floor of the wide, familiar hallway. It was a habit he’d never broken, though there was no need for stealth here. Terrible, unforgivable things happened when you let your guard down. But this was the safest place for a Mythean in Edinburgh since it was hidden from the prying eyes of mortals, who shouldn’t know of the existence of the supernatural beings who walked among them.

He pushed open the old oak door at the end of the hall and entered his friend’s office, a book-filled room lit by a small fire that smelled of autumn. Warren looked up from his cluttered desk and leaned back in his chair.

“Cadan, thanks for coming in so early.”

“No’ a problem,” Cadan said. He sank into an old leather chair across from Warren’s desk. “Who’s it this time?”

As one of the few Mythean Guardians in the world, it had been Cadan’s responsibility for nearly two millennia to protect those mortal or supernatural beings deemed important to the fate of humanity.

Warren glanced down at a rumpled piece of paper. “Looks like a Celtic warrior.”

Interesting—a man who’d been alive for as long as he. “Why’s the bloke need protecting if he’s made it this long? Destiny just revealed to him?”

And why haven’t I met him before? Though he didn’t get out much, Cadan knew, or knew of, nearly all the Mytheans in Great Britain. The ones who hadn’t gone rogue, at least.

“Well, that’s where it gets a little strange. The warrior hasn’t been alive. The soul has just been reborn.”

“A reincarnate? They’re damn rare. Doona think I’ve ever actually met one.”

“It doesn’t happen very often,” Warren said, picking up the Slinky on his desk and fiddling with it.

Why wouldn’t Warren meet his eyes? The claws of nerves crawled up Cadan’s back, little pinpricks sinking into his skin that wouldn’t shake loose. It took him off guard; he hadn’t felt that in centuries.

“I’ve spoken briefly to Aerten about it.” Warren finally glanced at him, but looked away almost immediately.

Shite.

“What does the goddess of fate have to say about it?” He hadn’t seen her in ages. Hell, he’d only seen her a few times since she’d offered him a spot in the Praesidium. Whether he should thank her or curse her was something he hadn’t figured out yet.

“That only select souls are reborn. Those who were so strong in life that their souls never left this plane.” Warren set the Slinky down. “Their souls wait in stasis until humanity needs them. At that point, they’re brought back to perform a task that only they can accomplish.”

“So, I’m going to be protecting a child who will save the world?” A cold sweat broke out on his skin. Killing and guarding adults—no’ a problem. But dealing with children was something he was entirely unqualified for after being alone for two thousand years. Fuck, what a mess.

“No’ exactly,” Warren hedged. “Apparently with Druidic reincarnation, the soul is reborn in another person, but the person doesn’t become conscious of their previous life until they reach the approximate age at which they died originally.”

“Shite, they develop split personalities?”

“Ah, no’ exactly.” He paused, seemingly unaware that he’d grabbed the Slinky again and was juggling it faster and faster. “They doona survive that long. Once they remember who they are and complete their fated task, they die.”

“Die? That’s some shite luck.”

“Aye. The tragedy that took the soul too early the first time follows it. History is destined to repeat itself, after all. You need to protect the reincarnate until the fated task is complete, longer if you can.”

That would be a challenge, but then, he liked a challenge. “Do we know what this guy’s task will be, once he regains his memory? And where is he, anyway?”

“Doona know the task, but Aerten has prophesied that a catalyzing event will spur the memory of the reincarnate and lead them to Arthur’s Seat, likely today or tomorrow. That’s where you’ll meet.” Warren hesitated before continuing, finally meeting Cadan’s eyes. “And the warrior isn’t a man.”

Cadan’s breath stuck in his throat and a chill broke out on his skin. Nay, it couldn’t be. “Who is it, Warren?”

“It’s Boudica.”

A little a bit about the book:

With the dragon blood of her Viking ancestors coursing through her veins, Torra MacLomain has long tried to keep her Scottish clan safe. But a ruthless enemy has been watching…waiting. As Keir Hamilton launches his plan to possess her, many secrets come to light including her passion for a certain highlander.

When Colin MacLeod’s undying love for Torra is discovered, he’s given an ultimatum. Watch his lass die a brutal death or defect from his clan to lead the Hamilton armies. Four winters later and in charge of Keir’s warriors, Colin battles in an ongoing war against the MacLomains. Yet now the worst has come to pass. His ill-found chieftain has finally trapped Torra.

In a castle siege unlike any other and because of time travel, the modern day Brouns and medieval MacLomains join together in a final stand-off against their merciless enemy. Battles rage. Mysteries are revealed. Freedom is found. But most importantly, a love long repressed at last rises up determined to conquer all in Plight of the Highlander.

And here is a larger piece of the cake (aka an Excerpt):

“Colin reeled her in until she stood between his legs. He braced his hands on her hips, eyes penetrating as he said, “You keep secrets…even from me.”

“Especially from you,” she whispered, voice failing when thickened with emotion. “‘Tis safer that way.”

Colin’s face remained impassive and he clasped her hips a fraction tighter. “There is nothing safe about me not knowing what you intend. To keep me without knowledge only makes it more difficult for me to protect you.”

Torra gently touched his cheek, thoughts once more on the eve before as she murmured, “There will be times that you cannae protect me, that I must fight battles on my own.” Unable to stop herself, she ran the pad of her thumb softly over his lower lip. “‘Tis all part of the fear that you help me face, aye?”

Colin closed his eyes briefly before they narrowed on her once more and he shook his head sharply. “I cannae force words from your lips but know this, ‘twill be unforgivable if harm befalls you and I could not help because you shut me out.”

Torra offered a small nod. What else could she do? Pain and frustration were clear enough in his eyes. That caused her grief as she thought about what he had done for her the previous night. What he had done to her. Not only his kiss but his touch had kindled a wide swath of sensations that swept her away in a rising tide of soul-deep need. She never imagined a simple kiss could feel so good.

Now sampled, she wanted more. Far more. But it wasn’t just his lips she craved. Now she knew there was an indescribable pleasure to be found in his arms. Torra instinctually pulled away. But Colin didn’t let her get too far. His eyes flared and whipped down her body then back to her flushed face.

When he stood she put up a hand and shook her head. On a heavy swallow she said, “Nay, ‘tis too soon. I need time to gain confidence.”

Her words sounded like an excuse even to her own ears. Mayhap for all she thought this morn that she had come so far, she had not at all. Torra watched Colin internally fight his assertive nature. She knew full well he was tempted to pull her into his arms. Instead, he inhaled deeply and raked a hand through his hair.

“Confidence will only be gained through repetition. ‘Tis what I tell my warriors,” he muttered under his breath and stalked into the adjoining chamber.

“I am not one of your warriors,” she reminded, following, trying not to get aggravated.

“Aye, but you are.” Colin’s regard swung her way as he poured two mugs of mead. “You are mine and you are a warrior.” He handed her a mug, eyes the hardest she’d ever seen them. “If you will not share your secrets then I will focus ever harder on those aspects of this war in which I can help.”

She knew precisely what aspects those were. Torra set aside the mug and crossed her arms over her chest. “So you think to train me by seducing me?”

“Aye, lass.” His lips quirked but his eyes remained mirthless. “Your greatest strength lies in the relationship you have with the dragon. To become the best warrior you can you must have full control over your other half.”

It didn’t matter how much sense he made, his words irked her. But despite her rising temper, Torra was surprised to realize that not only his words but the stern way he looked at her ignited…desire? This time his lips didn’t quirk but curled up ever so slowly, well aware of both her mental and physical reaction.”

Like he hasn’t heard that before.

About Irish Winters

Irish Winters is an award-winning author who dabbles in poetry, grandchildren, and rarely (as in extremely rarely) the kitchen. More prone to be outdoors than in, she grew up the quintessential tomboy on a farm in rural Wisconsin, spent her teenage years in the Pacific Northwest, but calls the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah home. For now.

The wife of one handsome husband and the mother of three perfect sons, Irish divides her time between writing at home and travelling the country with her man while – writing. (Seriously, what else?)

She believes in making every day count for something and follows the wise admonition of her mother to, “Look out the window and see something!”
